“…religious madness is believed to come from focus on the deity-from desire for God or from the vision of God. The worlds of matter and spirit are suddenly seen to be united and the illusory barrier between them falls. Religious madness is not insanity; it is closer to the romantic definition of madness: genius, poetry, art, impassioned ora-tion. To call Caitanya, Nityananda, and Ramakrsna mad was not to insult them, but to compliment them and show respect; theirs was a "good" madness. To understand these we may ask two questions: Why does the ecstatic act mad? Why does the nonecstatic act mad?” -Prof. June McDaniel, The Madness of the Saints.

The fine line between insanity and ecstatic religious experience (particularly within the spiritual traditions of Bengal) is what is explored and demonstrated in Professor June McDaniel’s 1989 book, “The Madness of the Saints : Ecstatic Religion in Bengal”. Inspired by that book, as well as O.B.L.Kapoor’s “Saints Of Bengal” , we will go to some of the holy places where the line between insanity and ecstatic religious experience have blurred. These places include the residences and temples of saints and Deities from Bhakti, Shakti, and Tantric traditions. The trip also includes those places where these traditions come together in syncretic abandonment of such restrictive labeling.

We will meet practitioners from the different lineages of Bengal, with a special focus on the lineage of Nityananda prabhu, who is known as “Pagal Nitai” or “crazy Nitai.” Within the lineage of Nityananda ji, there are many branches and sub-branches spread throughout India. We will spend time with sadhus and sadhakas from a few different branches. We will share meals, stories, and kirtan along the way, and every morning there will be yogasana and pranayama classes. For the duration of the trip we will be staying in the most luxurious accomodations available, see below for more information on that.
